Equine Therapy & Horse Therapy
“In the quiet strength of horses, discover your own resilience and the courage to face life’s challenges.”
Equine therapy — also called horse therapy or Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) — is a hands-on, experiential approach where children, teens, and families work alongside horses to build emotional skills. Unlike traditional talk therapy, equine therapy lets clients practice coping strategies in real time through guided horse interactions.
Horses are natural experts in non-verbal communication and emotional attunement. As partners in equine therapy sessions, they offer immediate, non-judgmental feedback that creates profound therapeutic breakthroughs for children and adolescents.
“At Unbridled Chances, we believe every challenge is a chance for growth — and that the right support makes all the difference.”

Dr. Yule is a licensed pediatric psychologist in California (PSY33904) specializing in child therapy, adolescent therapy, and family therapy for children ages 2–22 and their parents. Based in Palos Verdes Estates and available via telehealth throughout California, she earned her Ph.D. at Marquette University and completed advanced pediatric psychology training at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).
She founded Unbridled Chances to offer a holistic approach to child and adolescent mental health — combining evidence-based child therapy with equine therapy (horse therapy), also known as Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy. This unique blend allows Dr. Yule to meet children and families where they are, whether in a traditional therapy setting or alongside horses.
As a pediatric psychologist, Dr. Yule works with children and adolescents facing a wide range of challenges — including anxiety, ADHD, ARFID and feeding difficulties, trauma, behavioral difficulties, chronic medical conditions, and everyday life stressors. She is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Therapy, Biofeedback, and Family Systems approaches, and brings these evidence-based methods to every child therapy and family therapy session.
By integrating traditional child therapy with equine therapy in a natural setting, Dr. Yule offers a dynamic and effective approach to overcoming life’s challenges. She sees clients in-person in Palos Verdes Estates and via telehealth throughout California, serving children from early childhood through young adulthood (ages 2–22) as well as their parents and families.
Dr. Yule’s goal is to partner with youth and their families to help make the journey of life easier and more manageable. She uses a mix of warmth, humor, and genuineness to collaboratively help individuals achieve their goals. During her free time, she enjoys hiking, taking her dogs for walks along the ocean, horseback riding, spending time with her family, and cooking and baking.

Child & Adolescent Therapy
Individual child therapy and adolescent therapy at Unbridled Chances involves 1:1 sessions between your child and Dr. Yule, a licensed pediatric psychologist. Sessions are available in-person and via telehealth throughout California. As an experienced child psychologist, Dr. Yule creates a safe, accepting space where children and teens can explore their strengths, understand their challenges, and build lasting coping skills.
As a child psychologist and pediatric psychologist, Dr. Yule specializes in treating anxiety in children, childhood depression, ADHD, behavioral difficulties, and everyday stressors and life transitions in youth. She is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Therapy, Biofeedback, and Family Systems-based approaches — evidence-based methods proven effective in child therapy.
Dr. Yule also has specialized training as a pediatric psychologist working with youth managing chronic medical conditions, helping children and teens adjust and build confidence alongside their diagnosis. She also has expertise in Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and child feeding difficulties — supporting children and families navigating extreme picky eating, food refusal, and the anxiety and stress that surrounds mealtimes.
Family Therapy
Family therapy at Unbridled Chances focuses on improving the dynamics of the family unit — particularly the relationship between parents and children. As a licensed child psychologist and family therapist, Dr. Yule uses attachment-based and family systems therapy approaches to improve parent-child communication, resolve conflict, and build greater resilience within the family.
Families seek out family therapy during times of stress and transition, when communication has broken down, when a child’s behavioral or emotional challenges are affecting the whole family, or simply when parents want to feel more connected and supported in their roles. Family therapy is a collaborative, strengths-based process tailored to each family’s unique needs.
Parent Coaching & Parent Therapy
Parent coaching — sometimes called parent therapy — helps parents and caregivers build the skills, confidence, and strategies needed to support their children’s emotional and behavioral health. Parenting is one of the most demanding roles there is, and no child comes with a how-to guide. Dr. Yule, a licensed pediatric psychologist, offers parent coaching designed to meet your family where you are — in-person or via telehealth.
Parent therapy sessions at Unbridled Chances provide psychoeducation and concrete parenting tools tailored to your child’s specific needs — whether your child is struggling with anxiety, ADHD, behavioral challenges, or other difficulties. Sessions help you identify your unique strengths as a caregiver and equip you with practical techniques to raise a resilient, emotionally healthy child.

Equine Therapy & Horse Therapy
“In the quiet strength of horses, discover your own resilience and the courage to face life’s challenges.”
Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) — commonly known as equine therapy or horse therapy — is a unique, experiential, relational, and somatic-based approach to mental health that focuses on well-being, healing, and growth. At Unbridled Chances, Dr. Yule incorporates horses into child therapy, adolescent therapy, and family therapy sessions to help clients develop new skills and coping strategies.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, equine therapy allows participants to learn about themselves — thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships — while practicing skills hands-on through guided interactions with horses. This makes horse therapy particularly powerful for children and teens who struggle to engage in traditional office-based therapy.
Equine therapy and horse therapy have been shown to be beneficial for children, adolescents, and adults managing depression, anxiety, eating disorders, ADHD, PTSD, and Autism; and for those affected by relationship difficulties, parent-child conflict, trauma, grief, or chronic pain and medical conditions.
At Unbridled Chances, horses are not tools in the therapy process — they are partners and co-facilitators in every equine therapy session. As prey animals that live fully in the present moment, horses are natural experts in non-verbal communication and emotional attunement. In horse therapy sessions, they provide non-judgmental, honest, and immediate feedback that creates meaningful breakthroughs for children and families.
No horse experience is needed or expected. Equine therapy at Unbridled Chances is not a mounted riding experience — it is psychotherapy conducted alongside horses.
EFP can be used as stand-alone therapy or in combination with traditional child therapy or family therapy sessions. Dr. Yule is certified in Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy through The HERD Institute.
Why Horses?
Most people who come to equine therapy are surprised by how quickly horses see through them — and how that honesty changes everything. I’ve been riding and working with horses since I was five years old. Over 25 years of horsemanship, I’ve learned that horses don’t respond to who you want people to think you are. They respond to who you actually are, in that moment, in your body.
That quality — their radical honesty and full presence — is exactly what makes them such powerful therapeutic partners. Children who have learned to mask, shut down, or perform for the adults in their lives can’t do that with a horse. The horse responds to their nervous system, not their words. And in that unguarded moment, real therapy can happen.
What I bring to this work is the integration of two identities I’ve carried my whole life: pediatric psychologist and equestrian. As a psychologist, I understand the clinical mechanisms behind why equine-facilitated therapy works — the nervous system regulation, the relational dynamics, the somatic learning. As a lifelong equestrian, I understand horses — their body language, their emotional sensitivity, and how to create a space where both the client and the horse can show up fully. That combination, lived rather than learned, is what makes this work genuinely different.
“Twenty-five years of riding and working with horses taught me things about trust, nonverbal communication, and emotional regulation that no textbook could. Bringing that into my clinical work isn’t just a program feature — it’s who I am.”
— Dr. Kristen Yule, PhD
Meet the Co-Facilitator
Chance is Dr. Yule’s equine partner and co-facilitator in every Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy session. More than just a therapy horse, Chance is a collaborator — attuned, present, and extraordinarily perceptive.
Like all horses, Chance lives entirely in the present moment. He responds to what clients bring into the space — their energy, their emotions, their body language — with honesty and without judgment. His reactions become a mirror, reflecting back something true about the person standing with him, often before they’ve found the words themselves.
Working alongside someone who has known Chance for years — who understands his personality, his sensitivities, and his strengths — means clients can feel safe and supported from the very first session.

The best choice depends on your individual needs, preferences, and therapeutic goals. Many clients find value in integrating both approaches. During your initial consultation, we’ll work together to determine the most suitable path for your journey to well-being.

No experience with horses is needed or expected. Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) at Unbridled Chances is not a riding or horsemanship program — it is psychotherapy conducted alongside horses on the ground. Dr. Yule guides every session and the horses respond naturally to what you bring into the space, creating meaningful therapeutic moments regardless of your background with animals.
Yes. Safety is a top priority in every equine therapy session. All activities take place on the ground — there is no riding involved. Dr. Yule is certified in equine facilitated psychotherapy through the HERD Institute and works only with horses that are well-suited to this therapeutic setting. Sessions are fully supervised and paced according to each client’s comfort level.
Equine therapy is particularly effective for children, adolescents, and families who benefit from experiential, hands-on approaches — especially those who find traditional talk therapy difficult to engage with. It has been shown to be helpful for anxiety, ADHD, ARFID, PTSD, autism, trauma, grief, and relationship difficulties. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or alongside traditional sessions.
